The True Meaning of Opening Day

In today's Fast Break, I try to find the root of what makes Opening Day here in Cincinnati so special and unique.

Follow me on Twitter. Gotta be down at the stadium really early so not much on the blog today. Enjoy the greatest moment of the Reds 2010 season to get you ready for this new season! Go Reds!

2010 Reds Memories

Today's Cincinnati Fast Break is a chance to get nostalgic about last year's outstanding Reds season.

Mo Egger on what he's going to be looking for out of this year's Reds club.

No offense to these folks, but I'm not a fan of Opening Day streaks. If you can make it every year, outstanding, but how many of these people come back to lots of games throughout the year? Some do, but many do not. Come back for the baseball, not for just the pomp and circumstance of Opening Day.

This is why Brandon Phillips is my favorite player on the Reds roster.

Hopefully Zach Collaros and the rest of the 2011 Cincinnati Bearcats have this same attitude as they begin spring practice.

Follow me on Twitter. Listen to me tonight on GoBearcats.com for live baseball action at 6:30. UC's taking on UD, should be a great battle. Make it a great day folks.

Minor League Sports Updates

Today's Cincinnati Fast Break focuses on the little guys. Sports in the Tri-State are more than just the Reds, Bengals, UC and XU. Today I look at the River Monsters, Cyclones, and a shout out to Cincinnati's High School Basketball champions.

Mike Leake is going to be asked to contribute early due to injuries and he ended his spring on a positive note.

Chad Ochocinco's time as a professional soccer player might be coming to an end today.

UC's Pro Day was yesterday and the dreaded Turf Monster reared it's ugly head.

Here's your Amazing Soccer Goal for today.

Even the most professional and polished broadcasters are still just little kids at heart.

Follow me on Twitter. Apparently Senators games aren't entertaining enough to keep this guy's attention long enough to stop him from making an Internet sensation. I apologize in advance for Ke$ha light.

Regional Finals Reaction

After taking last week off, the Fast Break is back and ready for the Final Four and the start of baseball season later this week. Here's today's Cincinnati Fast Break:

This is the biggest reason why the Reds have had more success on the field in the past few years.

The Reds are gaining tons of respect, even the folks in St. Louis are jumping on board.

Everyone in the NL Central is getting banged up early this season and Buster Olney has thoughts on that issue.

Good for Brian Gregory, but I think the move is better for UD and bad for Georgia Tech. Wasn't this guy a chronic underachiever in the A-10?

Here's where Act-like-you've-been-there Guy has a massive heart attack.

Seriously though, I never got the burning furniture to celebrate a big victory mentality. Folks in Lexington and Columbus must be really loaded if they have extra couches around to just burn to the ground.

You're hardcore if you stuck around long enough to see the end of this game...

Follow me on Twitter here. Do people still fly kites anymore? Maybe this is why they are primed for a comeback.

Bearcats bounced by UConn

The final Cincinnati Fast Break of the 2010-2011 college basketball season for UC:

Time to put the next phase of UC’s rebuilding plan into effect.

This gives me cause for concern. The Reds do have depth at pitching, but Cueto is a key to their success.
Mark Sheldon weighs in on Cueto’s situation.

This is beyond inspirational.

Here’s the full video of the craziest basketball game ending I’ve ever seen. Just a microcosm of the rest of this weekend’s insanity in the NCAA Tournament.

As Barry Bonds finally goes to trial today, the bigger question is: Who cares? His reputation is already in the toilet as is. Let’s see if the government can nail him, my guess is he doesn’t spend time in prison.

I’m not concerned about what people say about the Big East’s performance in this year’s Tournament. Everything is nuts as is and the way Big East teams have exited just adds to it.

Here’s how your favorite ESPN personalities’ brackets are doing. President Obama’s bracket is strong, despite all the upsets.

The Cotton Bowl people are praying that the Fiesta Bowl gets the book thrown at them.

UC defeats Missouri & XU v Marquette

Here's your Cincinnati Fast Break for today:

Now is the time to start taking notice of the Bearcats? You're a little late to the party, buddy...

Here's the secret to Tu Holloway's success.

It's time for the Reds to start making some cuts from their Spring Training roster.

Mike Leake is still uncertain as to what his role with the Reds will be this season.

Someone must think the NCAA is gonna come down hard on Jim Tressel because that's the only reason I think he did this.

This image brings joy to my heart...

I have a feeling this happens WAY too often...

Here's your link to follow me on Twitter. I'll be on GoBearcats.com Saturday and Sunday afternoon calling UC Baseball action against Western Michigan. Have a great weekend and enjoy the NCAA Tournament insanity.
Enjoy some Brian Regan to start off your weekend right!

UC v Missouri & West Region Breakdown

Southwest & Southeast Region Breakdown

Here’s how you can listen to me babble:

Jason Horowitz and Jon Rothstein have been giving video previews of every NCAA Tournament game coming up on Thursday and Friday.
Here’s a look at UC v Missouri.
Xavier v Marquette’s preview is here.

Speaking of Missouri, might UC decide not to use full court pressure against a team that does the same?

Marquette always seems to reload with talent, which is a concern for Xavier in Friday’s game.

Dusty Baker is deep, man… and a little random.

Stuff like this makes me understand why some Americans don’t fully understand hockey. I love the NHL and I’m still scratching my head.

Then there’s this situation, who was terrible on the Roast of Donald Trump by the way, which is crazy for hockey and announcers everywhere. Yo dude, didn’t they ever teach you about not peaking too early. (It’s a broadcasting term, sickos.)

Speaking of overreacting, I have a feeling I looked like this at UC games during my time in the student section, minus the d-bag pink shirt.

Scary situation here, taking a pitch is hardly easy. Taking one to the face is terrifying.
I know I shouldn’t laugh but the coach in the video sounds like he’s doing a bad job of taunting the kid, IN THE FACE, IN THE FACE!

Follow me on Twitter here.
I leave you with a very confused child. Nothing like a baby who can’t make up his mind to be terrified or bust out in laughter.

East Regional Breakdown

Today’s Cincinnati Fast Break:

A look back at how Mick Cronin scrapped his way through the past five years to finally get UC back to the NCAA Tournament.

Bill Koch wonders how UC would have fared this season if Lance Stephenson wouldn’t have left to ride the pine for the Pacers. I personally think the Bearcats are better off without him, but if Mick would have been able to adjust his attitude the way he did with Yancy Gates, this team could have been scary good with a go-to scorer.

Xavier’s talented women’s team feels they got robbed out of playing in the Dayton regional in the NCAA Tournament, and I have to agree. The Women’s tournament is one of the most corrupt and unusual events you’ll find. The projected good teams are the ones that get chosen to host the first rounds, like Xavier gets to do this year, because the NCAA knows those schools will sell tickets. Xavier not getting respect, because they are a smaller school, is the reason they have to go to Spokane instead of Dayton. Just goes to show the ongoing corruptness of the governing body of collegiate athletics.

Ever want to get your wife, fiancée, girlfriend, friend you’re awkwardly trying to move in on, etc… to be interested in sports? These tips might help.

I leave you with great moments in college basketball via Legos. Have a great Tuesday folks.

Selection Sunday Recap

Here’s your Cincinnati Fast Break for today with all kinds of March Madness:

Hope your Selection Sunday was more than just One Shining Moment. Here’s Gus Johnson to get you in the mood for hoops.

Bill Koch has reaction to UC’s selection to the Big Dance.
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20110313/SPT0101/303130043/Dance-invitation-not-enough-UC

P-Doc tells UC fans that if you still have bitter feelings against Mick Cronin, it’s time to get over it.

Shannon Russell reminds us that Xavier is somewhat familiar with Marquette.

ESPN has spent WAY too much time debating the biggest snubs of the Tournament. Here’s what you need to know about them in a nutshell.

Here’s a list of five games that could be some of the most exciting on Thursday and Friday.

Ryan Hanigan gets a new three-year, $4 million contract. I like the move, he’ll be key in mentoring the Reds’ stronghold of catching prospects that will come up over the next few seasons.

Soldier Field is going to finally appear in Madden next year? Awesome? Seriously, I hate when athletic venues won’t let video games use their actual name or likeness. Get over yourself, it’s just a name…

Folks in Cleveland are enjoying this a little too much…

Enjoy wasting time at work filling out your brackets today. I leave you with a look at real Madness, bracket style.

UC destroyed by ND and Xavier in the A-10 Tournament

First of all, thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in Japan, Hawaii and other countries who are feeling the effects of the earthquake and tsunami. In the grand scheme of life, sports are a fun diversion from a lot of things, but there are far more important happenings right now.

Here’s today’s Cincinnati Fast Break:

The Reds dropped their Spring Training game against the Giants yesterday in the Spring opener for Edinson Volquez. Here’s a look back at the game and Edinson’s crazy travel week.

P-Doc claims that the constant clamoring for a traditional leadoff hitter is something that few teams have and something the Reds don’t necessarily need.

Ohio high school football is outstanding, but they lack behind other states in one important issue.

I’m really tired of hearing about the NFL labor situation and every little detail that doesn’t get them any closer to a new CBA. However, this article provides some good perspective and new legal options.

I feel for these kids who are trying to make a name for themselves, but even at the college level you can pump out a better quality broadcast than this.

I’m dead!” No, you’re just an idiot who was running around in oncoming traffic. Stay off drugs kids.

You might hate soccer, but look at this video and tell me that’s not impressive.

Not a fan of Gus Johnson’s? Then you’ll love this under reaction to a game-winning shot.

Apparently Cincinnati is really good at Facebook, Twitter, Four Square, etc… Does that make us really geeky or socially advanced?

Here’s where I tell you to follow me on Twitter. Have a great weekend and enjoy Selection Sunday! Listen to GoBearcats.com this weekend for live coverage of UC Baseball versus Cleveland State. I’ll be calling games Saturday at 4:00 and Sunday at 1:00. Enjoy a laugh courtesy of everyone’s favorite basket case, Charlie Sheen.

Moving on in the Big East Tournament

Here's your Cincinnati Fast Break for today:

Jim Calhoun always seemed like a big baby, but this is just crazy. He talks about Kemba Walker like he’s the second coming of Michael Jordan.

Here’s a new mock draft done by one of Youngstown, Ohio’s favorite sons.

This doesn’t give me any confidence about the Bengals first pick at #4.

When talking about the Reds, one guy brings charisma and energy like none other. CBS Sports gives a new perspective on him.

This end to the St. John’s/Rutgers game has been well publicized by now but it shows a bigger overall problem in sports.

Good officials should be practically anonymous, if I show up at the game and I see officials I recognize, it’s usually because they’ve screwed things up in the past and have a bad reputation. I can also tell you that I’ve seen plenty of bad games called by Jim Burr and Tim Higgins, two of the refs in yesterday’s debacle, over the years at UC. I understand that good officials make mistakes from time to time, but I have never seen officials so blatantly ignore something as black and white as stepping out of bounds the way it was done yesterday. If I’m the NCAA, those three are done officiating for the year. Give them an early vacation and reevaluate them for next season. Rutgers may not have won, but they certainly would have had a shot to tie it up from the free throw line had they made ONE correct call down the stretch. And kudos to Rutgers coach Mike Rice who took the high road and was a real class act in the wake of all this controversy.
UPDATE: Since the time of today's podcast, the officiating crew of Jim Burr, Tim Higgins, and Earl Walton have withdrawn their services from the remainder of the Big East Tournament.

Mark Schlabach gives some fresh perspective on the cover up scandal at Ohio State. This is bad news for the Sweater Vest, a coach who has always been relatively clean. That being said, this is a big problem and the penalties that the NCAA might inflict on Ohio State could be way worse than these self-imposed sanctions. I think Bob Knight had some great perspective on the situation yesterday on Mike and Mike. He said that any good coach would probably do the same thing, stating that it would be very difficult to go and tattle on his kids to the NCAA. I can understand that logic, relationships between player and coach can be very father-and-son like. However, Buckeye fans need to hope the NCAA has mercy on OSU because this could get very ugly very quickly.
This kid from the Ohio State newspaper wants the Vested One fired.

John Buccigross has a look at the top candidates for the Hart Trophy.

A sad goodbye to Tim and My Mom Calls Me George who are moving on from Kiss 107 here in Cincinnati. Two really great guys who always treated me with tons of respect and kindness when I worked down the hall from them at Clear Channel. Best wishes to them in their future endeavors. Here’s where I would normally show a video of one of their great prank calls to other cities, but the folks out there have already removed every scrap of content they produced from both the Kiss 107 website and from the station’s YouTube channel. Classy move…

Follow me on Twitter here; I always welcome your comments. Should be another great day of college basketball as the big conference tournaments are starting to heat up. Enjoy some good old-fashioned Bruin fan violence. I always wondered where Boston guys get all their pent up rage from.

UC v USF @ Big East Tournament

Sorry everyone for the lack of material today. Ash Wednesday mass this morning really cut into my prime work time. Don't worry, there's still a podcast today. Enjoy the Big East Tournament all day long. Should be some great matchups today.

No Respect for the Bearcats

Here's your Cincinnati Fast Break for today:

I apologize for your lack of productivity now, but this is pretty much just a poor man’s Watson.

P-Doc offers a look into one of the Reds’ biggest contributors from last season and if he can stay healthy enough to be a factor once again.

Chad Ochocinco boxes to keep in shape, but this guy would destroy 85.

Here’s a good look at the bubble teams to watch over the next five days in conference tournaments.

I’ve really enjoyed the additions of a blogger for each conference on ESPN.com to help their college football coverage. In Brian Bennett’s latest piece, he gives some love to the UC football strength and conditioning program.

Season’s over already, right?

I like the fact that someone finally stood up for the Bearcats nationally, but for the love of all that is holy, can someone update their UC logo? It’s been wrong on their videos for years…

Wow, you folks in South Bend didn’t have enough money, or enough brains, for this earlier?

Follow me on Twitter here. Enjoy your Fat Tuesday with one of the funniest moments from Whose Line is it Anyway?

As always I welcome your suggestions via Twitter or Facebook on how I can improve or what kinds of stuff you’d like to see on here.

Without further ado, here’s today’s Cincinnati Fast Break.

Mike Decoursey of The Sporting News has a primer on this week’s major conference tournaments here.

Whether right or wrong, you never ever cheer in a press box. Here is a cautionary tale for aspiring broadcasters and journalists.

I know it’s only Spring Training, but beating down the Cubs like this always feels good.

Johnny Cueto signed a big extension in the offseason and vows to ramp up his production this season.

The Cincinnati high school sports scene is unlike any other throughout the country. Here's a list of the Top 100 male multi-sport athletes in Cincinnati history.
